| If you're looking for free software for simple jobs, than notepad should be fine, just type in the code, than save as "all files" and type in your file extension, but if you're getting into more complex projects, than Dreamweaver is a must. Especially since it'll be easier to test your code and find bugs in dreamweaver than if you had a bunch of notepad files open, trying to do the same thing. |

Sorry, but I have to disagree that Dreamweaver is a must. There are free editors that do pretty much all that Dreamweaver does and they do it very well. The FTP function in Dreamweaver is not needed as using a separate free FTP program allows more versatility. Plus, many free editors also have the FTP function built in. They also have the HTML Tidy code checker and additional functions to allow checking the HTML and CSS file with the w3c.org's validators.
Adobe, like Microsoft, has tried to corner a marker with resource hogs. DW originally couldn't even code HTML or CSS according to the standards at the time. It still struggles at doing so. Adobe will eventually be left out in the cold and their expensive software will be outdated when browsers fully support CSS 3.0/HTML 5.0 standards.
Like everything else, it is BETTER if you know how to hand code your HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript from scratch. Then you'll have a good understanding of the code and what corrections may be needed to correct it since you wrote it and not some "dumb" software.
And...yes, I DO have Dreamweaver, but don't use it unless I'm forced to as it is integrated with my AdobeCreative Suite Web Standard. |

I use free HTML editor Codelobster PHP Edition.
It also has HTML code inspector like FireBug has. |
