Status Traffic Light page

I am not sure if this is the correct place for this post but here goes...
How difficult/easy is it to create a "traffic light" system. If you are unsure what I mean then let me try and explain.
I want to create a status page for my intranet, red for unservicable, amber for underinvestigation and green for everything alright. I know that I will need to link this page to a spreadsheet but other than that I haven't got a clue. Any advice of sites for me to explore the answer etc... are well received.
