sorry if this is in the wrong place
i'm having a problem adding this to my website. can anybody tell me how to do this the right way, i added the meta tag and i was getting Status 404 (Not found) so i changed it to a file but i'm getting the samething

Are you talking about the XML sitemaps? The meta tag just "verifies" you are the owner, nothing else.
If you are getting a 404 error - that is page not found. So it is probably telling you that you have a link somewhere that is pointing to a path that is not there.
