I want to put my web site up for testing\viewing but would like to password protect the site till I am ready to release it on the public. There nothing secret to hide just want to keep prying eyes away for a while.
Anybody point me to a tutorial of web page on how to password protect my site.

Membership login might help you out. But it might just be easier to put a link that no one would know - so even if they went to http://www.example.com, a blank page would come up but you would go to http://www.example.com/secretpage.html. Then once it is all over and done with, you would just rename secretpage.html to something else
