Implementing HTML coding on empty webspace?

Hey guys, i've been reading about how to write various pieces of HTML code, but i'm still clueless on how to actually implement it.

I've got an FTP client which i've used to put files on and take files off the space i have, starkey.razakel.co.uk but i'm currently in my first year of a degree in computing science and I want to create something for just a little personal project.
