drown down menu to overlap image or ad

Hi! I placed a drop down menu at the top of my site... but for some reason, the ad right underneath the menu is overlapping the menu items. so if i hover over the menu, and the drop down appears, it can't be seen because the ad underneath it covers it up. is there any code to make the drop down menu overlap the ad. that way the menu items can be seen. is there some code to place the ad underneath sort of like when you layer, it's on the second layer and the menu is on the first.

i hope you get what i'm trying to say, any help will be appreciated. thanks!

Without any code to work with or a live site to look at, all I can say is 'z-index'.
